ABOUT THE ARTIST
A working artist and educator, with vast experience in multiple art disciplines, James VanCoppenolle has both a Bachelors and Masters in Art from Eastern Michigan University and workshop experiences through both the College of Creative Studies (in Detroit) and the Schools Of the Art Institute Of Chicago.
Focused on capturing the essence of the subject, be it landscape, portrait, or developing conceptual elements within abstract works. Finding the qualities that are uniquely identifiable, yet relatable for viewers. Often incorporating humor through whimsey or nostalgia within the composition. Commissioned work often combines these components with client desire.
Known for intimate portraits of individuals and groups, featured against backgrounds that deepen and accentuate the true spirit of the subject, whether a person or family pet. He also applies these same principles towards the development of landscapes. Many of which reflect an experience with a passion for nurturing the earth and growing plants and caring for animals.
40 years experience as a teacher has developed an exceptionally versatile knack for different materials (mediums include oils, acrylics, watercolor, color pencil, ink, graphite and mixed media. Also an understanding that we “Learn by Doing”, and reviewing the process as well as the product. This is a Mantra for a self-guided journey in Art and Expression.
